Young Bulgarian artist wins prestigious award

The winner of the prestigious 2021 BAZA Award for young contemporary artist is Marta Djourina - one of the participants in the exhibition Brave New Earth: Looking Forward Through Memories, organised by the State Cultural Institute with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Berlin Artist Association and the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in Belin.

Curated by Nia Tabakova, an art expert with the State Cultural Institute, the exhibition featured nine young Bulgarian artists and ten German artists and took place in July at the gallery of the Berlin Artist Association in the German capital.

Marta Djourina was selected by the jury for the 2021 BAZA Award from among 40 talented young Bulgarian artists and will have the opportunity for a two-month art residency in New York. Among the seven finalists was also Martian Tabakov, one of the participants in the platform Next Balkan: Contemporary Bulgarian art in Belgrade, organised by the DOMA Arts Foundation in association with the State Cultural Institute and the Embassy of Bulgaria in Belgrade.

The exhibition showcasing all artists nominated for the 2021 BAZA Award for contemporary art - Mitch Brezounek, Marina Genova, Marta Djourina, Alexander Lazarkov, Mitko Mitkov, Silvia Popova and Martian Tabakov - can be seen at the Sofia City Art Gallery until 29 August.
