Bulgaria will get the world’s most modern combat plane at the best possible price, assured US ambassador to Sofia H.E. Eric Rubin in relation to the potential purchase of F-16 aircrafts that Bulgaria is currently negotiating with the US on behalf of its Air Force. Ambassador Rubin took part in The Policies of Bulgaria in the Euro-Atlantic Reality Conference, which was held on 7 May in Sofia.

“Looking at the whole package, (…) a commitment from the US to support Bulgarian military aviation as our allies (is evident). I think the price is reasonable. I understand it is a high price but we will support Bulgaria’s needs in light of the reality it faces. I assure you that Bulgaria will have the most modern combat aircraft when the deal is completed, and for us it is an important goal not only for strengthening the security of Bulgaria but also of NATO,” Rubin said. He was adamant that Bulgaria and the US have a good partnership. “The word ‘interdependence’ is a key factor in shaping relations between Bulgaria and the US. We must keep protecting what we have achieved but also ensure that it will continue in the future,” the US diplomat noted, reiterating his country’s support for diversification, which is viewed as an important factor for national security.

Ambassador Rubin also commented on energy issues, saying that the US is in favour of both diversification and the completion of the Bulgarian gas pipeline. “We look forward to seeing the results soon. Supplying gas from other sources, for example from Azerbaijan, is a key project that will give energy independence to Bulgaria. This is also an important factor for the national security of the country,” Rubin remarked.
