President Donald Trump warned Moscow not to interfere in US elections as he received Russia’s top diplomat Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday. The White House also said after the talks that the two sides made no visible progress on nuclear arms control.

Trump and Lavrov met in the Oval Office for roughly an hour, but that meeting did not open to the press and Lavrov did not answer shouted questions, news wires reported.

Speaking at a news conference with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo later, Lavrov said Moscow wanted to publish US-Russian communications that according to him cleared Russia of allegations it meddled in the 2016 US election but that Washington had blocked their release. He repeated Russian denials of interference.

Lavrov also renewed Moscow’s offer to extend the US-Russia New START arms control treaty, while Trump and Pompeo stressed the need for a strategic dialogue that also included China.

The bilateral meetings in Washington took place as Democrats in the US House of Representatives announced impeachment charges against Trump that accuse him of abusing power by pressuring Ukraine to probe a political rival and obstructing the subsequent Congress investigation.
