The beginning of a new era for iPhone
But customers must say good-bye to essential accessoriesEuropost
The long-awaited Apple Event 2020 finally happened! Tim Cook finally confirmed the exciting new features of the iPhone 12. And if you're that person who always drops their iPhone, leaving you with a cracked screen, then Apple's latest smartphone will surely excite you.
The Verge reported that iPhone 12 will have a new ceramic-hardened display called Gorilla Glass. This new protective feature, described as "ceramic shield" is available on all new iPhones - iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Max. According to Apple the new screen is stronger than any smartphone glass currently - it is lightweight, rigid, as well as heat and electricity resistant.
So what else? All four new devices come with 5G, including the ultra-fast millimeter wave version. The company's 5.4-inch iPhone 12 Mini, 6.1-inch iPhone 12, 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Max also pack in some of the biggest advances Apple has made in years.
The entire iPhone 12 lineup features a new revamped design, reminiscent of Apple's iPad Pro tablets. In addition, the new phones come with Apple's updated A14 Bionic, the same chip that's in the new iPad Air. They also get bumps in their camera capabilities. For instance, the premium iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max have three rear-facing cameras and have LiDAR for depth mapping, AR and low-light autofocus. The 12 Pro gets a new telephoto lens with an optical zoom of 2.5X, while the Pro Max gets a 5X optical zoom, a big jump from the 2X optical zoom of older generations. Both get other camera tweaks and come with 128GB, 256GB and 512GB storage options. As for the display, the 12 Pro packs in a 6.1-inch display, while the Pro Max features a 6.7-inch screen.
In the meantime, the iPhone 12 is reportedly 11% thinner, 15% smaller and 16% lighter than the older iPhone 11. It features a 6.1-inch, Super Retina XDR OLED display with smaller bezels than its predecessors, as well as 64GB, 128GB and 256GB storage options. The iPhone 12 also has dual, 12MP camera lenses with an f2.4 ultra wide and f1.6 wide. It also can capture photos using Night Mode, as well as night time lapse.
Nevertheless, there is one issue. The most valuable multinational technology company in the world is stripping off several of the inclusions and iconic package of the newly released iPhone 12, such as the Ear Pods and Power Adaptor.
Notably, Apple claims that shrinking the box alone and removing the essential accessories can reduce 2 million metric tons of carbon emissions. Not only that, fewer trucks and transport will be needed to ship the same volume of iPhone 12 to various locations globally. That being said, the same price for the newly released iPhone 12 and its variants, the iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max, are still seeing almost the same price tag as the previous release of the iPhone 11 - something customers are already quite unhappy with. The starting prices range from $699 for the Mini - making it one of the cheapest premium 5G phones on the market - to $1,099 for the Max.
