Sonya Yoncheva has won the Singer of the Year honour from the 2021 Opus Klassik Awards. The Bulgarian soprano earned that recognition for her English-language Rebirth album, her team revealed.

Opus Klassik are the European equivalent of the Grammys. The actual award ceremony will take place on 10 October at Konzerthaus Berlin and will be broadcasted by the largest TV channels in Europe.

“I’m extremely happy to have won this prestigious award for an album that is so close to my heart,” Yoncheva said. In the autumn, she is set to give a series of concerts with the material from Rebirth, which, in addition to classical pieces, features two songs – Zableyalo mi agantse (Lamb Starts to Bleat), which is a Bulgarian folk song, and Like an Angel Passing Through My Room from ABBA’s repertoire, which the world-renowned Bulgarian soprano is using with the blessing of Benny Andersson, member of the legendary Swedish band.

On 31 August, Sonya Yoncheva will perform together with Placido Domingo at a stage outside the St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia. The concert will be streamed live online for viewers worldwide.

The organisers say that they will be taking special measures to ensure that the audience has a safe and enjoyable musical experience. A team of 150 professionals and ushers will take care of the visitors’ comfort and safety.
