Sofia to head BSEC under 'Sea of opportunities' sloganEuropost
Bulgaria is taking over the leadership of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) under the slogan “Sea of opportunities”, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced. The country is assuming the rotating chairmanship of the organisation for the first six months of 2019. The Bulgarian chairmanship-in-office vows to work for the development of BSEC as a project-oriented organisation. Cooperation in the fields of culture, transport and environmental protection will be a priority.
The Bulgarian chairmanship will also strive to deepen business relations between countries in the region as well as to enhance coordination in the operation of BSEC and its specialised bodies in the future. Those include the Parliamentary Assembly of BSEC (PABSEC), the Black Sea Trade and Development Bank (BSTDB), the International Centre for Black Sea Studies (ICBSS), and the BSEC Business Council.
Another priority of the Bulgarian chairmanship is to continue the ongoing efforts to reform the organisation and help it adapt to modern challenges. Bulgaria will also work to promote quality cooperation between the European Union and BSEC.
One of the Bulgarian chairmanship's goals is to ensure that the events scheduled for the first half of 2019 contribute to the successful implementation of the BSEC Economic Agenda.
The success of the chairmanship, which is the fourth ever for Bulgaria, will contribute to boosting Bulgaria's regional foreign policy. This is in line with one of the country's foreign policy priorities - namely, promoting active relations with the countries of the broader Black Sea region, the Ministry notes.
BSEC was established in 1992, with Bulgaria as one of its 11 founding countries. Today, the organisation encompasses also Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Greece, Moldova, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Turkey and Ukraine.
