Small Procida Island wins Italian Capital of Culture 2022

Procida, a tiny island off Naples, has been crowned Italian Capital of Culture 2022, Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism announced on 18 January.

Congratulating Procida, Culture minister Dario Franceschini underlined that its project was based on the island's culture and coastline, as well as on "transmitting a poetic message." He noted that the colourful Mediterranean island would "accompany us in the year of the restart and rebirth."

With its winning presentation titled La Cultura non Isola (Culture does not isolate), Procida beat nine other finalists in the competition for the title: Ancona, Bari, Cerveteri, L'Aquila, Pieve di Soligo, Taranto, Trapani, Verbania and Volterra.

Procida is located between Capo Miseno and the island of Ischia. It is less than 4.1 square kilometers. Its coastlines, very jagged, are 16 km. Geologically, the island was created by the eruption of four volcanoes, now dormant and submerged.

Procida has featured in more than 30 movies including The Postman (Il Postino) and The Talented Mr. Ripley. The island was also the site of filming for scenes in Cleopatra.

In 2013, Fabrizio Borgogna launched the Procida Film Festival, an international contest for young movie directors, writers and lovers.

Parma is currently Italy's capital of culture for 2020-2021 while the culture capital status for 2023 has already been awarded to Bergamo and Brescia.
