Negotiations begin now and the Parliament is ready, said in a statement European Parliament President David Sassoli, following decision of President von der Leyen on Thursday to activate Article 324 of the EU Treaties and convene meeting on 8 July. She invited David Sassoli, Angela Merkel, and Charles Michel to meet and  take stock of progress and prepare the intensive political negotiations that lie ahead in order to reach a swift and ambitious agreement on the European recovery package.

The decision of President von der Leyen to activate Article 324 of the EU Treaties highlights that all institutions are ready and committed to providing answers for European citizens, he stressed specifying that on Thursday he received a mandate from the Conference of Presidents, made up of leaders of political groups in the Parliament, to negotiate the terms for an ambitious agreement.

“We will play our part in the discussions with the Commission and the Council. It is important that this process starts before the meeting of the European Council on 17 and 18 July. This will ensure that Heads of State and Government are clear on the conditions the European Parliament needs to see to be able to vote in favour of an agreement,” President Sassoli underlined.
