Russia has recorded an all-time high of 808 deaths related to the coronavirus in one day, dpa reported, citing data provided by authorities in Moscow on Thursday. For weeks, the country has been reporting high death tolls despite a drop in the number of new infections. On Thursday, almost 22,000 new cases were registered nationwide.

The more contagious Delta variant is spreading rapidly in Russia. According to the latest official figures, just under 27% of the population of around 146 million have had at least once vaccination jab.

The Sputnik V vaccine has already been on the Russian market for a year. Nevertheless, there is widespread vaccination scepticism in the country.

According to official statistics, more than 168,000 people have died from Covid-19 in Russia so far. It is assumed that the number of unreported cases is higher.
