Roberto Fonseca, the pianist from Buena Vista Social Club, will have on 8 July in Sofia a world premiere of his new fusion project Beyond the Notes, together with the Bulgarian women's choir New Bulgarian Voices, the organisers announced, quoted by the Bulgarian News Agency. In their words, Bulgarian folk rhythms breathe in the fire of Cuban jazz and pour into a new, captivating pulsation.

The story of Beyond the Notes began in 2008, when Fonseca was a guest with his quintette at the Jazz Plus Festival in Bulgaria Hall. His arrival in Sofia coincided with the end of his European tour and he stayed in Bulgaria for a few days. The piece called Bulgarian was born out of his experience in Sofia and is part of his album Akokan (2009).

The musical meeting of the Cuban trio of Roberto Fonseca and the Bulgarian choir New Bulgarian Voices, led by maestro Georgi Petkov, happened in 2020, but the state of emergency due to the coronavirus crisis proved to be an obstacle for the realisation of their idea.

The new project of Jazz Plus and Montuno Productions features a new vocal arrangement by Georgi Petkov of the piece titled Bulgarian. “This arrangement convinced me of the existence of God,” commented Roberto Fonseca after seeing the musical notation sent to him by maestro Petkov.
