“This is my second time in Sofia and I am really happy because I am about to take the stage outside one of the biggest Orthodox cathedrals in Europe.

During my first visit to Bulgaria several years ago, I went to see the St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral with my wife Marta and we were really impressed. Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to work with great Bulgarian singers such as Ghena Dimitrova, Raina Kabaivanska, Krassimira Stoyanova, Nicolai Ghiaurov, and Nicola Ghiuselev.

This time, I will share the stage with an exceptional singer like Sonya Yoncheva, who won the Operalia some years ago. I created this competition with the idea of providing an avenue to success for the young generation. It is especially exciting when the winners go on to become world-renowned artists like Yoncheva,” Placido Domingo said following his Bulgaria Hall rehearsal with the Sofia Philharmonic under the conduction of Nayden Todorov. On several occasions, the musicians burst into applause after performances by the famed tenor.

“Great artists do not save themselves. Just look at the way he is rehearsing!” exclaimed Sonya Yoncheva to the Euronews crew sent to Sofia to cover one of the marquee musical events of the year in Europe. “He is an entire era in the world of opera. I am glad that he accepted the invitation to do this concert for the Bulgarian audience,” Yoncheva said.
