Mike Pompeo visits Jewish settlement in occupied West Bank

Mike Pompeo became the first US Secretary of state to make an official visit to a Jewish settlement in occupied Palestinian territory in the West Bank, Israeli Army Radio and the campaign group Peace Now reported on Thursday.

The visit comes a year after Pompeo announced a U-turn in US policy on Israeli construction in the territory, saying Washington no longer viewed settlements there as illegal under international law. The outgoing administration of President Donald Trump has taken other controversial moves during the last four years which have outraged Palestinians, including moving its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, dpa recalls.

During a landmark meeting on Wednesday in Jerusalem with Mike Pompeo and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu Bahrain's FM Abdellatif al-Zayani said the historic US-brokered deals the Gulf kingdom and the UAE had struck to normalize ties with Israel would help foster a dawn of "peace for the entire Middle East". "To achieve and consolidate such a peace, the Palestinian and Israeli conflict needs to be resolved," the minister said as Pompeo and Netanyahu stood by at a joint press conference (pictured).
