Migrant smuggling network dismantled in Germany, Romania

The German and the Romanian police, supported by Europol, have dismantled a "massive" criminal network that was using also trucks to illegally smuggle migrants to western Europe, the EU law enforcement agency Europol announced on Thursday.

Austria, Hungary, the UK and Eurojust also took part in this two-year, Europe-wide operation, which ended on 13 November. During the final leg of the journey to western Europe, the migrants were forced to travel in lorries, a possible life threatening situation, Europol said. In the last phase of the operation, the Romanian Police carried out eight searches and arrested four suspected members of the organised crime group. The German Federal Police carried out five searches. The Romanian city of Timisoara has served as a 'hub' for the criminal network.
