Lukashenko’s inauguration lacks any democratic legitimacy, EU says

Тhe so-called ‘inauguration’ of 23 September and the new mandate claimed by Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko lack any democratic legitimacy, the EU said in a statement, issued on Thursday by the High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell.

The European Union’s position is clear: Belarusian citizens deserve the right to be represented by those they freely choose through new inclusive, transparent and credible elections, the statement also said.

The EU reconfirms its solidarity with the Belarusian people who continue to demonstrate peacefully for democracy and for their fundamental rights despite the brutal repression of the Belarusian authorities.
