Goethe-Institut launches poster competition

Goethe-Institut in Sofia announced on Tuesday that it is organising a poster competition dedicated to freedom, democracy and the role of art in modern society. Against the background of current events that continue to put democracy to the test, there arises a series of pressing questions about politics, freedom and the future. In this context, Goethe-Institut is asking questions related to art: where it is today, where it should be, and what role artists play in the political debate.

Looking for the answers to these questions, Goethe-Institut is organising a poster competition under the title “Where Is Art?” This unique call for action will be evaluating works reflecting the protest as a free form of expression, democratic values and the role of art in politics. The jury will be considering paintings, graphic drawings, photographs and poetry by Bulgarian or German artists of all ages.

Out of all applications, Goethe-Institut will choose five, and each will be printed out in 250 copies and posted in Sofia's open spaces in early October. The five winners will receive 200 leva each. In addition to the winning works in the poster competition, the organisers are also printing out images and texts created during Sofia Art Week 2020.

The competition is part of the Art & Politics project by Goethe-Institut in Bulgaria, which will also include painting workshops and discourse programmes over the coming weeks.
