Germany to mark Beethoven's 250th birthday with event broadcast online

Beethoven's 250th birthday will be marked on 17 December with the composer's Fifth Symphony conducted by Daniel Barenboim and performed by his West-Eastern Divan Orchestra in an event broadcast on television, radio and online, dpa reported.

Barenboim will also play Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto at the event in Bonn, the city where the composer was born. The day in fact marks the date of Beethoven's christening in 1770, according to a church register. His precise date of birth is uncertain.

The Beethoven Jubilee organization made the announcement in Bonn on Monday. The broadcast replaces the live concert that had been planned but has been cancelled as a result of the novel coronavirus pandemic. The concert was to have been the concluding event in the Beethoven Jubilee Year, but the postponement of other concerts means that they will be performed well into next year.
