Germany’s cabinet will discuss EU-UK deal on Monday

At a “Christmas Coreper” on Friday, the EU ambassadors started reviewing the agreement

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that she is pleased that with the reached agreement the future relations between the European Union and the United Kingdom are clearly regulated.

In a statement on Thursday, the German Chancellor underlined that “this is of historic importance”. She said the Federal Government will now intensively examine the agreement.

“But we are not starting from zero, the Commission has closely involved the Member States throughout the entire negotiation process. We will be able to assess quickly whether Germany can back today’s results of the negotiation, she said. The members of Germany’s cabinet will discuss the deal in a conference call on Monday.

In the meantime, the German Presidency kicked off on Friday a meeting of EU ambassadors, calling it a “Christmas Coreper”. The ambassadors started reviewing the 1,246 pages of the agreement between the EU and the UK and will continue the exercise during the next few days. EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier will brief them on the outcome of the negotiations.
