Facebook launches the metaverse revolution

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlined his plans for the next level of development of the social network and among them is to present a metaverse. In an interview for The Verge Zuckerberg shared his views related to the development of Facebook over the next five years.

The future of the company would go far beyond its current project of building a set of connected social apps and some hardware to support them. Instead, he said, Facebook would aim to build a maximalist, interconnected set of experiences straight out of sci-fi - a world known as the metaverse.

The metaverse is having a moment. Coined in Snow Crash, Neal Stephenson’s 1992 sci-fi novel, the term refers to a convergence of physical, augmented, and virtual reality in a shared online space.

The company’s divisions focused on products for communities, creators, commerce, and virtual reality would increasingly work to realize this vision, he said in a remote address to employees. “What I think is most interesting is how these themes will come together into a bigger idea,” Zuckerberg said. “Our overarching goal across all of these initiatives is to help bring the metaverse to life”, he added.

„The metaverse is a vision that spans many companies - the whole industry. You can think about it as the successor to the mobile internet. And it’s certainly not something that any one company is going to build, but I think a big part of our next chapter is going to hopefully be contributing to building that, in partnership with a lot of other companies and creators and developers. But you can think about the metaverse as an embodied internet, where instead of just viewing content - you are in it. And you feel present with other people as if you were in other places, having different experiences that you couldn’t necessarily do on a 2D app or webpage, like dancing, for example, or different types of fitness“, he added.

Zuckerberg further noted that his vision was to make people see Facebook as being a metaverse company. The metaverse will help people deliver and experience a much stronger sense of presence with the people they care about, the people they work with, the places they want to be. „And we’re clearly just at the beginning of this. So I think that’s going to be very exciting and people can customize their office space, and have it feel like what their physical office is and just be a digital continuation of that. So I think that’s pretty neat“, Zuckerberg said. He emphasized that the whole change including concept and technology is about to take some five years at least and the goals set in advance would inevitably be changed.
