EU mobilises urgent aid to India for tackling Covid crisis

The EU is preparing rapid assistance to India to tackle with the growing Covid crisis, in which infections have soared drastically and deaths have reached record highs.

“Alarmed by the epidemiological situation in India. We are ready to support. The EU is pooling resources to respond rapidly to India’s request for assistance via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. We stand in full solidarity with the Indian people”, wrote EC President Ursula von der Leyen on Sunday on twitter.

“Upon request for assistance by India, we have activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. The EU will do its utmost to mobilise assistance to support people of India. Our Emergency Response Coordination Centre is already coordinating with Member States that are ready to provide urgently needed oxygen and medicines rapidly”, Janez Lenarčič, EU Commissioner for Crisis Management, wrote on twitter.

On Sunday, India set a new global record of the most number of Covid-19 for daily coronavirus infections with further 349,691 cases.
