European Council President Charles Michel called an informal leaders' video conference on 29 October to focus on Covid-19. EU heads of state and prime ministers will discuss the need to strengthen the collective effort to fight the pandemic.

In his newsletter disseminated on 27 October, President Michel focused on boosting European action to beat the virus and highlighted the irreplaceable added value of the EU in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Every day counts and what we need now is determined action on an unequivocally European level, based on two pillars: testing and contact tracing, and vaccines, President Michel underlined. He also stressed the need to hold regular meetings of the members of the European Council, with the first due to take place via video conference on Thursday.

“In the face of this exceptional crisis, we must act swiftly and determinedly. Over the past few months, we have witnessed both setbacks and successes. However, the storm is not yet over. We are all in the same boat,” EUCO President asserted.

In the course of two meetings held in October, the European Council once again noted that operational coordination between the 27 member states ought to be boosted. It called upon the European Commission and the Member States to undertake efforts in that regard, in particular as regards testing methods, mutual recognition and vaccines.
