EMC, military intelligence and oligarchy’s talking points about Peevski (SUMMARY)

Delyan Peevski

What do you do when you have been lording over an agency that is key to the Bulgarian national security, draining its secrets (and those of foreign security services) for personal gain, and now you are finally exposed for your shady operations? Well, you try to cover up the traces, of course, by diverting attention to your №1 enemy and blaming your own sins on him, without any evidence or real connection at that (but that is irrelevant I suppose).

This week started the same way last week finished – with a clinic on how to achieve this. With a (propaganda) textbook campaign, the cogs of the Fake News Factory ran by the indicted oligarch Ivo Prokopiev and his shady-business cronies Tsvetan Vassilev, Ognyan Donev and Sasho Donchev proclaimed in unison that the charges of leaking information brought up against Gen. Plamen Angelov and Gen. Svetoslav Daskalov, the incumbent and former director of the military intelligence, respectively, were actually an attempt by lawmaker and Telegraph Media publisher Delyan Peevski to seize control of the agency. It is no coincidence that Peevski is viewed as an enemy of the abovementioned oligarchic clique mostly made up of indicted businessmen.

The talking point formulated by Prokopiev & Co. was immediately spread by every single publication owned by the oligarchic publishers, without a semblance of facts or truth – from Capital and Dnevnik to Mediapool, Frognews and all the negligible websites used by the crime group to inundate internet search engines and social media with manipulations and fake news.

What is really the truth? Ivo Prokopiev and Tsvetan Vassilev have been holding the military intelligence on a tight leash for years through figureheads at the helm of the agency and draining its secrets to serve the agenda of the behind-the-scenes clique in Bulgaria created by former PM Ivan Kostov (See here).

And because the charges against the two generals, one of whom is even directly linked to the Capital circle through his wife, unleashed a wave of revelations about how officials from the Military Information agency have been “reassigned” as taxi drivers (See here), the slandering machine hastened to put another fabrication about Peevski out there. With a helpful but far from unexpected assist from a socialist lawmaker with Moscow training in his background, it unfoundedly credited Peevski with having influenced the appointment of a new member of the Electronic Media Council (See here and here).

This approach is nothing new either. It has become a tradition over the past few years for the name of the MP of the opposition party Movement for Rights and Freedoms to be attached to any and all appointments to public office just so his name could be dragged through the fake-news mud spewed by the aforementioned publications on the internet. And so he was first claimed to have the Prosecutor’s Office under his thumb, even though a prosecutor ordered the Patent Office to erase the trademark of the newspaper with largest circulation in Bulgaria – Telegraph. Then he was supposedly controlling the court system – another talking point that was destroyed by facts after a magistrate of the Sofia City Court directly involved with the Capital circle and the oligarchs in the country sentenced the Telegraph Media publications Telegraph and Monitor for essentially telling the truth. The Bulgarian National Television, the EMC… the list of institutions to which Capital and the media outlets affiliated with it regularly attach Peevski’s name has more items than those publications’ circulations. At the same time, no facts are presented in support of their allegations for the simple reason that such cannot exist because these allegations are false. However, this has never stopped the machine spreading slander and lies disguised as journalism from disseminating falsehoods in an attempt to turn them into truth through the propaganda principle that a lie told enough times becomes a truth.
