Over 117 million vaccine doses are already in the EU and are now getting close to reaching 3 million vaccinations every day. Almost 30 million of Europeans are fully vaccinated. This newest data were announced by EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides during a debate with MEPs of the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee on Thursday.

“We have definitely turned a corner – thanks in large part to our vaccine strategy”, she said.

On the different reactions of Member States to the findings of European Medicines Agency’s safety committee on some vaccines, the Health Commissioner stated that EU countries are following sometimes their own even more strict scientific positions on the AstraZeneca vaccine.

She explained that for this reason, after the Health Ministers Council two weeks ago, she asked EMA to come forward with a new scientific opinion on AstraZeneca.

I am expecting this tomorrow, which will ask aidance on the issues to do with the second dose, with the gender and the age, she specified.

The Commissioner also said that production capacity across the EU is gathering pace, making it possible to speed up deliveries and have an additional 50 million doses from BioNTech-Pfizer over the next ten weeks.

The EU executive is also preparing for the next stages of the pandemic and the booster shots the citizens might be needing. Negotiations are on-going for the purchase 1.8 billion doses for 2022 and 2023.
