To celebrate the 2020 European Day of Languages, the Commission is organising on Monday, 28 September, a virtual conference ‘Education begins with language’. Indeed, this is the title of a new report by the EU executive, which seeks to support the implementation of the comprehensive approach to the teaching and learning of languages.
Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, will launch the discussion, focusing on the role of language competences in the context of the European Education Area, how to boost foreign language learning and how to incorporate language diversity and support literacy in all languages in schools. Five guest speakers from different EU countries will also contribute to the debate.
“Languages open up new worlds for us, forging unbreakable bonds with those who speak them, and allowing us to discover parts of ourselves that we didn't know existed. That is why nurturing linguistic diversity is so vital. It is what we are, it is what we want to remain,” Commissioner Gabriel tweeted.
The conference will be streamed live from 9am until midday in English and interpreted into French, German and Italian.
