Digital journey in theatre world

The Seagull, a production by Deutsches Theater, Germany

The fourteenth edition of the World Theatre in Sofia platform is shifting entirely to digital this year and will take place from 13 until 24 November. The platform offers a selection of theatre shows painting the aesthetics profile of the European theatre scene over the past two decades. Viewers will have completely free access to all streams for three days from the starting date. All shows will be made available to internet users across the country, are subtitled in Bulgarian and can be viewed only on

This year's special digital edition features projects created by Bulgarians with work experience abroad - Hause №13 directed by Stefan Moskov and starring Samuel Finzi at Thalia Theater, Hamburg; as well as A Swan Lake by the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, featuring Bulgarian ballet dancer Kaloyan Boyadjiev. The programme will conclude with an in memoriam dedicated to Dimitar Gochev, who directed Heiner Muller's Die Hamletmaschine in 2007 and acted in this Deutsches Theater production.

The three classics by Anton Chekhov - The Seagull, Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard - will be presented through powerful stage productions by German, Romanian and Belgian companies in the same year the world celebrates 160 years since the birth of the great playwright.

The programme showcases the many faces of modern theatre - shows based on classical and contemporary works, examples of Eugenio Barba's theatre anthropology and Milo Rau's political theatre, as well as the expanding real estate that theatre art takes up in contemporary ballet and circus.

The first title in the programme, which is being kicked off on 13 November at 7pm, is The Seagull in one of the last productions by the great German director Jurgen Gosch, which premiered in 2009. Reviews of the project tout the superb acting of leading Deutsches Theater company actors, including renowned theatre and film actress Corinna Harfouch and rising star Alexander Khuon.
