Deadly knife attack at primary school in Slovakia

A school employee has been killed and several others wounded in a knife attack in Vrutky, northern Slovakia, news wires reported. Slovak police have killed the 22-year-old attacker, a former pupil at the school, after he resisted arrest. The assault left a deputy head teacher dead, and another adult and four children injured.

Slovak media said the attacker had targeted the head teacher and deputy head, killing the deputy. Among those taken to hospital with stab wounds were two children, reports said. The school is said to include a kindergarten, primary school and senior school. The attacker fled the school and was countered by police a short distance away and shot dead.

Police President Milan Lucansky said the attacker was believed to be a former student. “He entered the school by smashing a glass door. Then some staff members tried to block and stop him, and he used a knife which he had brought with him,” he said. The motives for the attack remain unknown.
