Commission clears acquisition of part of Real Digital by Kaufland

The Commission has approved, under the EU Merger Regulation, the acquisition of part of Real Digital, currently controlled by SCP Retail Operations of Luxembourg, by Kaufland, controlled by the Schwarz Gruppe both of Germany. The transaction was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.

Real Digital is the digital business of the Real Group, including the online retail of food and non-food daily consumer goods as well as a digital market place. SCP Retail Operations invests and advices on investments primarily in the area of real estate.

Kaufland is a supermarket chain offering primarily food and other daily consumer goods. The Schwarz Gruppe is active via the Kaufland and Lidl supermarket chains in the retail of food and other daily consumer goods, as well as active in the production of certain food products and in recycling.

The EU executive concluded that the proposed acquisition would raise no competition concerns, given the limited combined market positions resulting from the proposed transaction.
