“My God! I'm shocked!” The young Bulgarian actress Maria Bakalova reacted with these words to the news about her Golden Globe nomination. She became the first Bulgarian Golden Globe nominee for best actress in the starring role in a movie musical or comedy, with her part in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, where she partnered with Sasha Baron Cohen.

With her first serious step towards а Golden Globe, Bakalova aspires to realise her personal cause - to give hope to artists from Eastern Europe that they have their place in the machine of world cinema and in Hollywood in particular.

She said that she was the happiest person in the whole world, sharing: “What excites and motivates me the most is the prospect of many Eastern European actors and filmmakers being noticed and finding opportunities in Western cinema where they have not been represented.”

In the Golden Globes category for best actress in a starring role in a movie musical or comedy, Bakalova will have to compete with stars of the rank of Kate Hudson, Michelle Pfeiffer, Rosamund Pike and Anya Taylor-Joy. We will find out on 28 February if she will succeed. The 78th Golden Globe Awards of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association are scheduled for that date.

Maria Bakalova was born on 4 June 1996 in the town of Burgas. She was taking singing and flute lessons as a child. In 2019, she graduated the National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts in Sofia.

We wish her success!
