Austria, Germany agree to lift border controls from 15 June

The Austrian government confirmed reports that border controls with Germany will be lifted from 15 June. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz have agreed on a two-step plan to ease travel restrictions, Austria’s tourism minister, Elisabeth Koestinger, told broadcaster ORF on Wednesday.

Some restrictions on border traffic will be eased from Friday and border controls will be completely lifted from 15 June, she said.

The border has been closed to travelers since mid-March due to coronavirus. The federal cabinet in Berlin will discuss the opening of borders today, as will the European Commission, which is expected to recommend opening borders between mutually low-impacted areas.
