The European Jazz Expo festival is held in the Sardinian capital Cagliari and is among the most prestigious music events in the jazz world. Sharing a stage with Paolo Nonnis’s group of musicians, which, stylistically, is a throwback to the legendary Buddy Rich Band of the 1960s and 1970s, Vassil Petrov sang some of Frank Sinatra’s classics in their original arrangements. All concerts featured in this year’s programme of the event will take place in elite jazz clubs.
In its 35-year-old history, the festival has hosted some of the biggest jazz stars – trumpet player Miles Davis, BB King, Dee Dee Brigewater, Chick Corea and Irakere, Ray Charles, Joe Cocker, James Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Herbie Hanckock, Chucho Valdes, Ornette Coleman and many others.
Vassil Petrov’s success in Sardinia comes less than a month before the ambitious show Sinatra: Vegas scheduled for 4 December in Hall 1 of the National Palace of Culture in Sofia. The star singer will perform for the Bulgarian audience hits like Something Stupid, Strangers in the Night, Fly Me to the Moon, and New York, New York, as well as fresh interpretations of film scores like that of Ocean’s Eleven, Bang Bang (She Shot Me Down) from Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill, and More from the film Mondo Cane.
Vassil Petrov will be accompanied by the Bulgarian National Radio Big Band under the conduction of Maestro Antoni Donchev. The show will also feature guest appearances by Hilda Kazasyan, Vessela Boneva, and Bruce Johnson (US) and a ballet company resembling The Rockettes decked out in dazzling stage costumes created especially for the show.
