Art Basel displays 290 galleries, 4000 artists

The 49th edition of Art Basel will display 290 galleries showing the works of 4000 artists. It will open doors to public on 14 June and once again will present the contemporary art market trends, BTA reported.

The sales to big galleries started buoyantly with a painting that sold for $11.9m within two and a half days. The works were kept aside for rich art collectors who view the pre-premier artworks and have a chance to buy before the official opening of the exhibition. On 12 June, Hauser and Wirth gallery of Zurich sold a work by Joan Mitchell for an eight-digit sum.
Brett Gorvey, co-founder of Levy Gorvey gallery, said that they sold a picture by Lucio Fontana and a collage by Matisse within half an hour after the opening. 
Art Basel brings the international art world together, it is equally important to art collectors, galleries and artists. Galleries sell up to 46% of their stock annually via this art fair.
