A first round of talks between top diplomats to try to save the Iranian nuclear deal concluded in Vienna on Friday and will be resumed next week, with participants sounding cautious optimism about the progress made so far, dpa reported.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Wednesday that talks in Vienna on rescuing a troubled 2015 nuclear deal had opened a "new chapter", AFP reported.

Austria is stepping up security at churches in case of copycat attacks after an Islamist gunman killed four people in a rampage earlier this month in which he may have intended to target houses of worship, the interior minister said on Thursday.

Attacks across central Vienna, in which gunmen killed three people and injured several others, were carried out by at least one “Islamist terrorist,” Austrian Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said on Tuesday.

Starting on Tuesday, a new train service will connect Berlin and Dresden with Prague, Vienna and Graz, restoring the historic Vindobona service. The new connection is a cooperation between Deutsche Bahn (DB), Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and Czech Railways (CD), news wires reported.

Ryanair’s Austrian airline Lauda announced on Friday it would shut down its main Vienna base by the end of May with the loss of more than 300 jobs in Austria after it did not manage to agree new labour contracts with the union. CEO Michael O’Leary said earlier in May that the group would shut down the main Vienna base of Lauda and bring in Ryanair jets instead unless staff agreed to a pay cut and a new labour agreement.

Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos and Commissioner for the Security Union Julian King will visit Vienna on Friday where they will participate in a ministerial conference on promoting partnership and building resilience with non-EU countries on security and migration.
