Trump approves plan to cut 9,500 troops in Germany

President Donald Trump approved a plan to slash the US military presence in Germany by 9,500 troops, the Defense Department said. Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said the move, which has sparked concerns in Berlin and in the NATO alliance, is to redeploy the troops and will "enhance Russian deterrence, strengthen NATO, and reassure allies." The move will cut the current troop level in Germany from about 34,500 to 25,000.

United States' Defence Department announced it is deploying 1,000 more US troops to the Middle East "for defensive purposes" amid growing tensions with Iran. Acting Defence Secretary Patrick Shanahan said Monday in a statement that the action, meant to address air, naval, and ground-based threats, comes after "a request from the US Central Command (CENTCOM) for additional forces."
