      Former Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva says he fears a "genocide" in Brazil because of fierce opposition to coronavirus containment measures by current President Jair Bolsonaro, whom he said should be impeached.  In an interview with AFP by video conference from his home near Sao Paulo, Lula, a hero of the Brazilian left, who served as president from 2003 to 2010, attacked the far-right leader who now holds the office.

      Brazil, hit hardest in the pandemic, appears to be quickly becoming a new global flashpoint, news wires reported. The Latin American country registered its highest COVID-19 death toll for a single day, with 881 new deaths confirmed over the past 24 hours, the health ministry said on Tuesday. Previously, the highest one-day toll in Brazil was 751 deaths on 8 May.
