      EU Council gives final green light to €14.2bn assistance for accession countries

      EU Member states on Tuesday gave the final green light to almost 14.2 billion euro of pre-accession financial assistance for the period 2021–2027 in favour of the Republic of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Kosovo, Montenegro, the Republic of North Macedonia, the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Turkey, EC Press service reported. This support will help beneficiaries carry out reforms with a view to future Union membership. The beneficiaries will be supported in conducting the necessary political, institutional, legal, administrative, social and economic reforms in order to comply with Union values and to progressively align themselves with Union rules, standards, policies and practices.

      EU prolongs economic sanctions on Russia over Ukraine by six months

      The European Council announced on Monday that it has decided to prolong the sanctions targeting specific economic sectors of the Russian Federation for a further six months, until 31 January 2022. The Council decision follows the latest assessment of the state of implementation of the Minsk agreements - initially foreseen to happen by 31 December 2015 - at the European Council of 24-25 June 2021. On that occasion EU leaders called on Russia to fully assume its responsibility in ensuring the full implementation of the Minsk agreements as the key condition for any substantial change in the EU’s stance.

      EU updates the list of countries for which travel restrictions should be lifted

      Following a review under the recommendation on the gradual lifting of the temporary restrictions on non-essential travel into the EU, the Council announced on Friday that it updated the list of countries, special administrative regions and other entities and territorial authorities for which travel restrictions should be lifted. As stipulated in the Council recommendation, this list will continue to be reviewed every two weeks and, as the case may be, updated, EC Press service reported.
