      EP to co-host a high-level Global State of Human Rights conference

      On 16 July, Parliament will co-host the first-ever Global State of Human Rights conference to discuss the state of human rights internationally, EP Press service reported on Monday. The conference will bring together MEPs, European Commissioners, Nobel Peace Prize recipients, Sakharov Prize laureates, representatives of international organisations, academia and stakeholders. They will discuss a variety of topics related to the global situation for human rights across three main panels. The conference is jointly organised by the European Parliament and the Global Campus of Human Rights.

      The inaugural plenary session of the Conference on the Future of Europe was held in Strasbourg on Saturday. During his opening statement, Parliament’s Co-Chair of the Executive Board, Guy Verhofstadt, said, “I see the Conference as a relay race. Citizens participating in panels will start it by defining their wishes and recommendations. Then, over several plenary sessions, they will hand over the baton and we will formulate concrete proposals for reform based on their recommendations”.

The goal of the Med5 Conference, organized at the initiative of the Greek Government, is to establish a common line in view of the ongoing debate on the new European Union Migration and Asylum Pact.

      Shaping the Conference on the Future of Europe

      In attempt to further spur the already lively debate around the Conference on the Future of Europe, the Commission set out onTuesday its ideas how the conference should be held in the next years, the EU press service reported. The EC stated in the communication that the conference should be launched on Europe Day, 9 May, and run for two years. The project was announced by EC President Ursula von der Leyen in order to give Europeans a greater say on what the EU does and how it works for them.
