Two more prosecutor’s offices support Geshev for institution’s top position

Two more official positions in support of Ivan Geshev’s candidacy for Bulgaria's prosecutor general have been released – this time by the regional prosecutor’s offices in Dobrich and Smolyan.

The statement of the prosecutors in Dobrich was backed by their colleagues from the district prosecutor’s offices in the entire judicial district as well as investigators and judicial system officials. “We believe that Ivan Geshev is the right nominee as a career prosecutor who knows the system well and who can be expected to have the trust of his colleagues. In making your decision, you should not cave to political or other type of external pressure, but rather enforce the provisions laid out in the Constitution and the Judicial System Act,” the position of the Regional Prosecutor’s Office reads.

Meanwhile, the Smolyan prosecutors addressed the Plenum of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC), stating that Ivan Geshev possesses “the decisiveness, knowledge and qualifications” to assume the position of prosecutor general.

“His body of work shows that he has the desire and ability to protect the image of the Prosecutor’s Office, its place in the judicial system and the ongoing reform of the (institution) started by (the incumbent) Sotir Tsatsarov. His nomination for prosecutor general fits the views of a large portion of our colleagues throughout the country that the (position should be occupied) by a person from the professional ranks of the prosecutors,” write the prosecutors from the Smolyan region, who also urge “for the attempts at external influence and all sorts of political insinuations (that have been accompanying the procedure) to be ignored”.

On Monday, a key stage in the election of the next prosecutor general will take place as the nominee Ivan Geshev is scheduled to present his concept for the development and management of the institution over the next seven years in writing.
