EU27 leaders gather in Sibiu for their informal summitEuropost , Brussels
The one-day informal EU27 leaders' summit in Sibiu, that is expected to forge the new directions for Europe’s future, will start today at 12.30. First on the agenda is the traditional exchange of views with EP President Antonio Tajani, followed by a family photo on the Piata Mare Square.
Afterwards the leaders will meet at Brukenthal Palace for a working lunch dedicated to Europe's place in the world. The afternoon working session will be held at Sibiu City Hall, where the EU leaders will discuss internal challenges facing the EU.
In the Invitation letter to EU heads of state or government European Council President Donald Tusk wrote: “We will gather in Sibiu on Europe Day to discuss strategic plans for the Union in the years ahead. In this context I will propose we adopt the Sibiu Declaration, sending a message of unity and confidence in our joint actions.”
I enclose an outline of the Strategic Agenda for the next five years, he pointed out adding that following the discussions in Sibiu will be formulated the 2019-2024 EU Strategic Agenda, to be adopted at the European Council in June.
Preparing for Sibiu, a week ago the Commission tabled a set of policy recommendations for how Europe can shape its future in an increasingly multipolar world. The executive suggested five dimensions on the EU's strategic agenda for 2019-2024: a protective Europe, a competitive Europe, a fair Europe, a sustainable Europe and an influential Europe.
