      Turkish troops have reportedly begun an offensive in northern Syria. The announcement was made today by Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who claims that the ultimate goal is for a "safe zone" to be created in Azas by clearing the location of Kurdish militias and for it to then house some of the 3.6 million Syrian refugees Ankara has accepted.

      Global military spending is continuing to increase, growing for the second year in a row and reaching the highest levels since reliable global figures became available in 1988. That's the finding of a new report out by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, which estimated that global spending on defense hit $1.82 trillion in 2018, up 2.6% on the previous year.

      US, South Korea reach deal on military costs

      The United States and South Korea struck a one-year deal on the shared costs of their military alliance on Sunday, removing a potential vulnerability in an upcoming US-North Korean presidential summit later this month. Under the new agreement, South Korea will contribute about $890m a year for the US military presence, which represents an 8.2% increase from the previous five-year deal which expired at the end of 2018.
