Khamenei orders uranium enrichment
7 June, 2018Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei has ordered preparations for renewing uranium enrichment, Iranian state media reported last week. “The Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran is duty-bound to prepare the ground for achieving 190,000 SWUs,” he has said. Khamenei has noted that the increase would be “within the framework of the JCPOA for the time being,” referring to the Iran nuclear accord. He pointed out the accord could only continue if the Europeans fulfil six conditions, including: promising not to question Iran over its ballistic missile programme or its regional activities; guaranteeing that Iran's oil will continue to be sold and compensating for any losses and buying any remaining stock; and having European banks guarantee financial transactions with Iran.Meanwhile, Iranian nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi announced Tehran has notified the IAEA that it has launched a plan to increase its uranium enrichment capacity, which includes the opening of the centre for production of new centrifuges. Salehi also emphasised that these moves do not mean the negotiations with Europe have failed.
