A bonding trip via the post
The Greetings from… Italy and Bulgaria exhibition is part of the rich cultural programme of Bulgaria's Presidency of the Council of the EU
9 March, 2018
A journey lasting a century has been told through postcards, hand-painted photos, coins and postage stamps from Bulgaria and Italy in an exhibition that was opened on 6 March at the National Ethnographic Museum in Sofia. The over 400 20th-century items are provided by the Collide Archives in Rome and the collection of the National Ethnographic Museum. The exhibition Greetings from… Italy and Bulgaria was unveiled by Ambassador of Italy to Bulgaria H.E. Stefano Baldi, together with the director of the Italian Cultural Institute Luigina Peddi and Dr. Petco Hristov, director of the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. H.E. Stefano Baldi described the exhibition as a journey through the social media of the past, which reveals how close Italy and Bulgaria are. He expressed hope that the display curated from the valuable historical archives of the two countries will plant the seeds of curiosity and contribute to the popularisation of various aspects of their past and traditions. Luigina Peddi, who is the event's curator on the Italian side, noted that the show is a testament to the intransient impact of symbols and images as a means of communication. Postage stamps have been replaced by electronic communications now, but back in the 20th century they were a true phenomenon. Many of them can be viewed as artefacts, while the actual greetings paint a picture of the time. Behind the ever-present phrase “Greetings and kisses from…” lie the exciting experiences and emotions of hundreds of Bulgarians and Italians. Bulgaria's National Ethnographic Museum collected old postcards from its very inception but part of the collection was lost when the building was destroyed during the WWII airstrikes on Sofia. Stamps and coins are also part of the collective memory of a nation and reveal its identity. The Greetings from… Italy and Bulgaria exhibition is part of the cultural programme of Bulgaria's Presidency of the Council of the EU.
